EEC 2017

European Epic Championship 2017

Last weekend I went to Copenhagen, Denmark for EEC 2017. It was a great weekend with a lot of nice people and good gaming. I brought the Space Marine army I have been play-testing for the last months:

TACTICAL [450] - 6 Tacticals, Supreme Commander, Hunter, Rhinos
TACTICAL [275] - 6 Tacticals, Rhinos
PREDATOR [325] - 4 Annihilator, Hunter
SCOUT [175] - 4 Scouts, Razorback, Rhinos
SCOUT [150] - 4 Scouts, Rhinos
ASSAULT [225] - 4 Assault Units, Captain
ASSAULT [225] - 4 Assault Units, Chaplain
THUNDERHAWK [200]
WARHOUND [275] - 1 Warhound Class Titan
WARHOUND [275] - 1 Warhound Class Titan
THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175] - 2 Thunderbolt Fighters
MARAUDER SQUADRON [250] - 2 Maurader bombers

There are some unconventional elements in the list but I really like how the list plays. The 15cm disembark distance of the Assault Marines makes a huge difference when setting up engages from the Thunderhawk. I also used the Assault Captain a lot to do combined engages with both Assault formations once they were on the ground. I was also positively surprised by the performance of the Marauders.  IMHO they are a better option for the Marines to get some barrage points than Whirlwinds.

First game

First game against Carsten (Germany One), and I was facing my fellow Space Marines from the Imperial Fist chapter:

TERMINATORS [375] - 4 Terminator units, Chaplain
TERMINATORS [375] - 4 Terminator units, Chaplain
DEVASTATOR [275] - 4 Devastator units, Rapier, 2 Bunkers + Minefields
DEVASTATOR [275] - 4 Devastator units, Rapier, 2 Bunkers + Minefields
TACTICAL [400] - 6 Tactical units, Hunter, 2 Rapier, Rhino
SCOUTS [175] - 4 Scout units, Razorback LAS, Rhino
SCOUTS [150] - 4 Scout units, Rhino
LAND SPEEDERS [200] - 4 Land speeder, Land Speeder Tornado
LAND SPEEDERS [200] - 4 Land speeder, Land Speeder Tornado
THUNDERFIRE BATTERY [250] - 4 Thunderfire Cannons
HYPERIOS PLATFORMS [125] - 3 Hyperios Platforms
2 STORM TALONS [200]

I placed my T&H objectives as wide and as far back as possible to avoid the Devastators. I started advancing down the center and targeted his mobility e.g. the Land Speeders with my air units. By the end of turn one I caught his BTS in an air assault and killed half of the unit with my Assault Marines.

Turn two and the Terminators came teleporting onto my Blitz and one of the T&H objectives (next to one of my Warhounds). I lost the initiative, and with that one of my Warhounds to the Terminators. In return I could do a combined assault with my Assault Marine formations on the surviving BTS units and wipe them out. Carsten was very unlucky with rallies in the end of turn two which put me in a good position for turn three.

In turn three it was all about breaking threw the defenses Carsten put up around his blitz. There was one Thunderfire battery in bunkers on the Blitz with Scouts in trenches 10 cm in front. I had to use whatever I had left without blastmarkes, including Predator Annihilators, to initiate assaults but in the end the combined force of one Tactical formation, once Scout formation, Predators and a Warhound managed to claim blitz. Carsten had also moved one of his Devastator squads slightly away from one of the bunkers (and the objective they were contesting) to help defend the blitz. Only one unit was still in range of the objective, and with some lucky dice my Thunderhawk managed to kill it and a lone Assault Marine could march across the board to claim T&H. 3-0 victory for me in the 3:rd with BTS, Blitz and T&H.

Second game

This time against Martin (Denmark two) and Iyanden Eldar:

SPIRIT WRAITHGUARD WARHOST [425] - 4x Wraithguard units, Wraithseer, Wraithguard
SPIRIT WRAITHBLADE WARHOST [225] - 4x Wraithblade units, Spiritseer
SPIRIT WRAITHLORD WARHOST [350] - 6x Wraithlord units, Spiritseer
ASPECT WARRIOR TROUPE [200] - 4 Swooping Hawk, Exarch
ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] - Cobra
ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] - Scorpion
ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] - Scorpion
RANGER TROUPE [100] - 4 Ranger
VAMPIRE RAIDER [200]
PHANTOM TITAN [750]

Facing a big shooty Eldar Titan i decided to go activation hunting in the early turns. I started by targeting the Super Heavies, breaking the Cobra and killing a Scorpion early. The final Scorpion went down in a firefight with my Scouts early turn 2. I used my air assault to break his BTS, but it cost me quite a few Assault Marines. I don't remember all the details of turns two and three but I played way too aggressive and by the end of turn three most of my formations were badly damaged. I had done quite a lot of damage in return and we were both down to a handful of activations each, the difference being that one of his activations was a Phantom Titan. I was forced to play for a draw in turn three, and turn four was all about not loosing the game. In the end of turn four I marched my BTS to contest both his T&H objectives (in between hit Phantom and Wraithlords) and I was very happy to get away with a draw

But... since we had time left we rolled for a turn five and to my dismay we both rolled a 2. And to add to my misery Martin won the initiative. He shot up my BTS with the Phantom and retained to finish them off with the Wraithlords (Phantom in support). But this time luck was on my side and he rolled a 1, failing his activation. The Wraithlords shot at the BTS formation but failed to break them. Doing so he left an opening between his formations which I could use to march the BTS onto one of my T&H objectives which was left uncontested. At this point I had 1 unit of Tacticals contesting my blitz, 1 Assault Marine unit claiming his blitz and three surviving Tactical units and a Rhino on one of my T&H. What should have been a 3-1 victory for Martin had turned into a 2-1 victory for me (Blitz and T&H vs. T&H)

Game three

Against Richard (UK) and his Black Legion:

RETINUE [425] - 8 Chaos Space Marines, (Tzeentch), Chaos Warlord (Supreme Commander), Obliterator, Daemonic Pact
RETINUE [340] - 8 Chaos Space Marines, Sorcerer Lord, (Tzeentch), Daemonic Pact, 4 Rhino
RETINUE [340] - 8 Chaos Space Marines, (Tzeentch), Sorcerer Lord, Daemonic Pact, 4 Rhino
CHAOS TERMINATORS [375] - 4 Chaos Terminator, Obliterator, Sorcerer Lord, (Tzeentch), Daemonic Pact
CHOSEN [170] - 4 Chaos Space Marine Scouts, (Tzeentch), 2 Rhino, Daemonic Pact
BIKE COMPANY [325] - 8 Chaos Space Marines Bikes, (Tzeentch), Sorcerer Lord, Daemonic Pact
DEATH WHEEL SQUADRON [275] - Death Wheel
DEATH WHEEL SQUADRON [275] - Death Wheel
HELL BLADES [200] - 3 Hell Blade Fighters
HELL BLADES [200] - 3 Hell Blade Fighters
DAEMON POOL [75] - 5 Lesser Daemon

I was again playing too aggressively and this time Richard was really punishing me for it. It all went bad when he teleported his Terminators onto the unprotected flank of my BTS and won initiative in round two. The power of daemons can be very effective when used correctly...

By then I had no plan how to win and did my best to not get completely steam rolled. In the end of turn three I landed my Thunderhawk and deployed assault marines on both sides to contest my blitz and the T&H objective he had focused on with three formations. Richard broke or killed two of them but with the third formation I managed to avoid a 5-0 loss. The game ended 3-0 with TSNP, DtF and BTS to Richard. If I would have played better I could probably have denied TSNP but I wasn't playing very well at all this game, and I faced an opponent who knew exactly how to take advantage of my mistakes.

Game four

Second day and I was facing Theis (Denmark One) and his Steel Legion:

REGIMENTAL HQ [500] - Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera
MECHANISED INFANTRY COMPANY [400] - Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera
TANK COMPANY [700] - 10 Leman Russ, Hydra
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
DEATHSTRIKE MISSILE BATTERY [200] - 2 Deathstrike Missile Launchers
FLAK BATTERY [150] - 3 Hydra
WARHOUND TITAN [275]
WARHOUND TITAN [275]
THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150] - 2 Thunderbolts
THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150] - 2 Thunderbolts

Steel Legion deployed heavily on their left flank with pretty much everything tightly packed together. This time I had promised myself to play it a bit less aggressive. We were advancing on each other down my right flank while my Scouts were marching down the left. Death Strikes failed to activate so I had both my Warhounds alive until turn two.

Turn two was also quite slow with Theis boxed in on the right flank and me trying to find something to assault without getting a ton of enemy fire support all over me. Finally late turn 2 Theis did a mistake and placed his Warhounds intermingled slightly ahead of the army. I called in my Assault Marines and broke both Titans in an air assault. I had to sacrifice the second Warhound (first one lost to the Death Strikes) to the regimental HQ to block them from engaging the Assault marines, but it was well worth it since the Assault Marines had their eyes on a juicy target for turn 3. Both IG Warhounds failed to rally thanks to some Scouts who had marched their way.

I won initiative turn three and my Assault formations jumped the Tank Company which had moved within CC range of the jump marines. I won the combat and the Tanks run away broken. My two Scout formations, which had both spend the majority of turn one and two marching, were now behind enemy lines and assaulted the Death Strikes guarding the IG blitz. They killed the two Death Strikes and formed a castle around the IG blitz to protect the objective. My BTS had already secured one of the T&H objectives and in the end I won 2-0 with T&H and Blitz in turn 3.

Final game

Against Andreas (Germany Two) and his Biel-Tan Eldar:

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [375] - Autarch, 8 Dark Reaper
GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] - Farseer, 7 Guardians
SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [300] - 5 Falcon, Fire Storm
SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [300] - 5 Falcon, Fire Storm
SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [300] - 5 Falcon, Fire Storm
SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [375] - 5 Fire Prism, Fire Storm
NIGHT SPINNER TROUPE [175] - 3 Night Spinners
NIGHT SPINNER TROUPE [175] - 3 Night Spinners
WARLOCK TITAN [850]

I was a bit thrown off my game by his army. It has an insane amount of AT firepower and a very powerful Titan. I'm used to playing more engagement focused armies which is more common in the Swedish scene.

Anyways, I choose corner deployment mainly because the terrain was in my favor. I had lots of things to hide behind and he did not. Again, i was playing very aggressive. I split my army into two groups and pushed them down one flank each. I tried to stay clear of the Warlock and targeted the grav-tanks. I got a few of them but he got many of my Rhinos in return. I air assaulted his aspects to get rid of his supreme commander in turn one, which cost me all Assault Marines and my Thunderhawk late turn one/early turn two.

By the end of turn two I was starting to run out of options. Andreas was still more or less in his deployment zone and at this point my plan was to distract him enough to miss the fact that he had no units on my half of the table (desperate plan, I know). I did a kamikaze attack on his blitz with my BTS and a Warhound. I did some good damage but more importantly he spend a lot of activations getting rid of my two formations, and hunting down and killing the BTS.

When he moved his Warlock to claim a T&H but staying on his side of the table I knew I had a chance to succeed. There were two formations with two broken falcons each on my table half and I had to kill them all (or trust my luck). Unfortunately I had to march my Predators back to my blitz, since they were the only unit in range so they could not participate in the hunt. In a joint effort between a Warhound, Scouts and Thunderbolts I killed them all and won 2-1 (DtF and TSNP vs. BTS) in turn 3.

Summary

It was a very nice weekend with a lot of nice people and good gaming. I'm very happy with my results. I ended up on fourth place individually and Sweden managed to take second place behind the UK team. I played well in two of my games, won two more on the mistakes of my opponents and lost to a better player in the third game. Thanks everyone for a great event, and especially Thomas and friends for organizing.

Deployment

Right side of the table: Marines deployed a tactical squad on the right flank with Predators next to it. In front of them are Scouts garrisoned in both building. Both Ork objectives are placed on this flank one on each side of the rightmost buildings. Both Blitz objectives are placed fairly centered.
On the left flank Marines have the Supreme Commander Tacticals and both Warhounds. Both Marine objectives are placed on this flank.

Orks deployed fairly compact apart from the Stormboys on the far left behind the rock formations. From my left there are Flackwagons with Big Guns garrisoned in front, the Stompa Mob with the Fortress Mob behind and finally the Mechanized Mob

Turn 1

SM1: Marines win initiative and places the Thunderbolts on CAP.

O1: The Big Guns double to get everyone into the forest and shoots the Scouts. No kills.
SM2: I see a chance to spread some BMs and hit the Fortress Mob with the Marauders, clipping one of the Stompas. One Orc and both Grots in the Fortress Mob are killed by the bombs.

O2: The Stompas fail and removes all BMs.

SM3: The Scouts in the left buildings fail and removes BMs.

O3: The Flakwagons double in behind the center ruins to hit the Marauders on their way out.

SM4: A Warhound doubles and kills one Stormboy and the Death Kopta. It fails a difficult terrain test when entering the forest and receives a wound :(

O4: The Stormboys fail and removes all BMs
SM5: The second Warhound joins the hunt for Stormboys, killing three. The two survivors break and retreats behind a forest on the far left.

O5: The Fortress Mob retaliates by doubling forward taking out both shields and two DC from the Warhound in the open. It redraws back towards the Marine deployment zone.
O6: Retaining the Dread Mob air assaults the remaining Warhound. The Warhound hits all his attacks but they are all saved. In return the Mob scores a massive 9 hits, and the Warhound goes down.
SM6: The SC Tacticals doubles into support range of the Dread Mob and places a BM.

SM7: Retaining the Assault Marines engages the Mob in a clipping assault. They win the combat by 7, but a single Nob manages to get away. He runs back towards the Ork Blitz.

O7: The Orks continue their quest to kill the Warhounds. Fighta Bombas hit the broken war engine but he manages to save all hits.

SM8: Predators double up the center and kills one wagon from the Fortress Mob.

O8: The second flight of Fighta Bombas comes in for the kill. They loose one to the Thunderbolt CAP but the remaining two planes manage to kill the Warhound.

SM9: The Tacticals double into the center ruins, placing a BM somewhere.

O9: The second Landa delivers the Bikes into a convenient crossfire position to take out the Thunderhawk. The Thunderhawk loose one DC but survives.

SM10: The remaining Scout formation doubles up the right flank, placing a BM on the Mechanized Warband.
O10: The Mechanized Warband doubles towards the Scouts and takes out the Razorback.

End Phase

One more Fighta Bomba is killed by a Hunter during fly-off. Both formations are now down to two fighters. Both broken Ork formations fails to rally.

Turn 2

O1: Orks win initiative! The Mechanized Warband massacres the Scouts in front of them. Not a single survivor...

O2: Retaining the Fortress mob fails, and backs away from the Assault Marines.
SM1: The SC Tacticals doubles towards the Bikes and places a BM.

SM2: Retaining the Assault Captain calls for a combined assaults on the Bikes. With fire support from the Tacticals the bikes are wiped out for a single Assault Marine.
O3: The Big Gunz sustain on the SC Tacticals, killing all Rhinos.
SM3: The Tacticals double towards the Mechanized Warband and places a BM.

SM4: Retaining, the Scouts engage the Mechanized Warband in a firefight. It's a close one but the Scouts win the roll-off and the Orks retreat behind the ruin on the right.
O4: The Stompas double into the center ruins and kill one Tactical from the SC formation. They also clip the Assault Chaplain formation for a BM.
SM5: The Predators double and kills three out of four Flakwagons hiding behind the center ruin
O5: A Landa ground attack the Supreme Commander, no kills.
SM6: The Marauders manages to ground attack, despite 3 BMs! They hack down a large chunk of the Mechanized Warband
O6: The second Landa finally break the SC Tacticals, killing one.
SM7: The Tunderbolts go on CAP

O7: The first flight of Fighta Bombas stand down.

SM8: The Thunderhawk stand down.

O8: The second flight of Fighta Bombas ground attack the broken Supreme Commander but are forced to jinx by the Thunderbolt interceptors.

End Phase

All aircrafts disengage. The Supreme Commander fails to rally. On the Ork side the Stormboyz fail (with SC re-roll), Mechanized Mob fail, the lone Nob from the Dread Mob fail and the remaining Flakwagon rally.

Turn 3

SM1: The Tacticals advance to defend an Orc T&H and break the rallied flack wagon with a few missiles.

O1: Fighta Bombas kill one Rhino from the Tacticals
SM2: The Assault Captain marches to secure the Marine Blitz
02: The Stompa Mob engages the Tacticals. It goes to two rounds and only a single Rhino manages to escape the Stompas, who lost one unit in the ruins.
SM3: The Predators moves in behind the Orks to contest the Blitz, failing to do any damage to the Fortress Mob.
O3: An empty Landa engages and wipes out the Scouts with a little help from his friends in the ruins.

SM4: The Marauders hit the Fortress Mob, loosing one to the Flakwagon but the survivor manages to kill a few units in return.

SM5: Seeing a chance to break the Fortress Mob before they can marshal, the Thunderbolts attempt a ground attack but fail despite a Supreme Commander re-roll.

O4: The Fortress Mob tries to reach the second Ork T&H on the right flank but ends up short.

SM6: The Assault Chaplain stretches his formation to secure both Marine T&H objectives.
O5: The Big Gunz move back to contest the Ork Blitz but fail to kill any Predators.
SM7: The Thunderhawk air assaults the Big Gunz but is destroyed during the firefight.

O6: The second Landa engages the broken Supreme Commander, wins the combat and secures BTS for the Orks.

End Phase

Neither side managed to win the battle, Orks have BTS and Marines have T&H, but we had to end the game due to time constraints. The Orks rally more or less everything and win the points count by almost 1000 points.

DACTYLIS SWARM [300] - 3 Dactylis

Deployment

I choose corner deployment playing from the bottom right, where I also put my Blitz as far away from the Tyranids as possible. Tyranid T&H objectives are placed left and right of the uppermost building and the Tyranid Blitz is behind the Domiatrix (as close to the Marines as possible) Marine T&H are spread out one in each corner of the battlefield.

Marine deployment from the left: Tacticals, Warhound and Predators in one corner of the deployment zone and Supreme Commander Tacticals and the other Warhound in the other corner. Both Scout units are garrisoned in the buildings.
Tyranids flooded their deployment zone with swarms. The Dominatrix, Biovores and Dactylises were set up closest to the Marines. Genestealers are garrisoned form the right Marine T&H and from the Blitz.

Turn 1

SM1: Marines win initiative and orders the rightmost Warhound to take care of the Genestealers threatening the Marine Scouts in the building. The Warhound advances and kills two Genestealers and the Brood Lord, breaking the formation. They fall back behind the rock next to the Warhound.

T1: The Dominatrix doubles towards the Warhound but doesn't manage to hurt the titan.

SM2: The second Warhound targets the second unit of Genestealers. He kills three of them with an advance, breaking the formation. The remaining Genestealers moves forwards towards the Marines.
T2: The Dactylis sustains on the Scouts in the building, killing one.
SM3: Thunderbolts wipes out the broken Genestealers in the forest.
T3: A swarm marches towards the Marine T&H in the left corner
SM4: Tacticals double into a forest killing two Termagants and a Zoantrope with some lucky sixes.
T4: A Swarm doubles into a forest and puts a BM on the Tacticals.
SM5: The Scouts in the building marshals, removing all BMs and advances towards the Dominatrix.
T5: Another swarm doubles into a forest and places another BM on the Tacticals.
SM6: The second Scout formation doubles forwards

T6: Biovores sustain on the Scouts placing 2 BM
SM7: The Predators double forwards and places a BM on a swarm.

T7: The Hive Tyrant doubles his swarm towards the Scouts and places another BM.
SM8: Marauders hits the swarm on the far left, killing 3 brood and a Tyranid Warrior.

T8: A swarm marshals, moving towards the Tacticals.

SM9: The Supreme moves down the right table edge, wiping out the broken Genestealers.

T9: The final swarm doubles towards the Scouts and adds to their blast marker collection.

SM10: The Assault Marines engages the swarm on the left flank wiping them out without any losses.

End Phase

All air formations disengage with one BM each.

Turn 2

Lictors teleport in behind the Marine lines with one BM.
SM1: Marines win initiative and the Scouts turns around to face the threat behind their backs. They engage the Lictors but bad luck sees two of them killed by the Lictors FF with no kills in return. The Scouts break and falls back.
SM2: Retaining the Warhound finishes what the Scouts started and engages the Lictors in a firefight. One dead Licor and the bugs breaks, loosing one more to hackdown. The Lictors runs towards the Marine Blitz

T1: A swarm engages the remaining Scout formation and manages to wipe them out.
T2: Retaining, the swarm on the far left engages the Assault Chaplain. They get a bit close and some of the Marines can countercharge into CC. The Marines manages to win the combat but looses the Chaplain and a Marine to the bugs.
SM3: The Tacticals double to the left flank and places a BM on a swarm.
SM4: The Assault Captain retains and engages. One Marine dies but they win the combat and only the Zoantrope escapes.

T3: The Hive Tyrant engages the Predators in a firefight. One tank goes down for 3 Termagants and the Hive Tyrant is forced to retreat.
SM5: The Thunderhawk shoots the rallied swarm by the left Marine T&H. Only the two warriors survive and the swarm breaks.
T4: Biovores sustain on the Predators, killing one.

SM4: The surviving Predators advance and wipes the lone broken Zoantrope.

T5: A swarm engages the Assault Captain, killing one marine breaking the formation. The Marines run towards the Tyranid Blitz.
SM7: A Warhound doubled towards the Tyranid Blitz, killing two Biovores breaking the formation.
T6: The Dactylis sustains on the Tacticals on the left flank, killing one.

SM8: Marauders stand down.

T7: The Dominatrix doubles to contest both Tyranid T&H objectives. It removed both shields from the nearby Warhound.

SM9: The Supreme Commander doubles in behind the Dominatrix, staying inside the Rhinos to maximize their engagement range during the next turn.
SM10: The Thunderbolts stand down
SM11: The Assault Chaplain marshes towards the Tyranid Blitz.

End Phase

Marines: Scouts rally but the Assault Captain fails, all formations (!) fail to remove BMs
Tyranids: All formations rally

Turn 3

SM1: Space marines wins initiative and the Warhound advances towards the Dominatrix, killing most of the brood in the open.
SM2: Retaining, the Supreme Commander engages the Dominatrix. Only the fearless Bio-Titan escapes, badly wounded with a single DC remaining.

T1: A swarm engages and breaks the rallied Scouts
T2: A swarm engages the Tacticals on the left flank. The marines cant make any of their saves and are wiped out!
SM3: Thunderbolts breaks the swarm guarding the left Marine T&H
SM4: The remaining Warhound doubles to catch the wounded Dominatrix in a crossfire. Both macro shots hit and BTS is secured for the Marines.

T3: The Biovores breaks the Assault Marines behind them.
T4: The Dactylis sustains on the Predators but miss all of them with their barrage.

SM5: The Predators fail and move to secure the left Marine T&H (one BM away from breaking)
T5: Lictors engage the broken Scouts by the Marine Blitz, they win the combat and grabs the objective.
SM6: Marauders breaks the last remaining Tyranid activation
SM7: The Thunderhawk lands to contest the Marine Blitz, shoots the Licotrs and breaks the formation.

The End

Marines win by 2-0 with T&H and BTS. It was a very tight game all the way into the final activations of round 3. Would the Dactylis have rolled average when shooting at my Predators they would have broken the tanks and I wouldn't have been able to hold both T&H objectives.

Thanks to my opponent for a very entertaining game of Epic!
